Abstinence Ed.: proselytizing with federal funds

Your tax dollars at work .

Pursue Faith.
The only way to keep strong in God is to read his word, talk to him and worship him 24/7. Keeping your focus on him will help you to stay pure in every other area of your life.

Understanding.
Wisdom plays a huge role in staying pure. When you have that understanding, you know which situations to avoid, what things aren’t appropriate to wear and what to keep your eyes from seeing.

Reputation Reputation and Integrity.
Reputation Reputation and Integrity go hand in hand because both deal with how you & portray yourself to other people. The definition of integrity is moral Integrity. soundness; honesty; freedom from corrupting influence or motive. When something is pure, for example a cup of water, it is composed of only one thing. The water has no particles of dirt in it and no drops of any other liquid. That’s the same deal with integrity. When you’re a person of integrity, you are completely 100% moral. And because you have integrity, people will automatically see you as a person with pure intentions and a good reputation. Strive to be pure in that sense.

Talk about God.
This is just as important as talking to God. When you let others know about who you believe in, it not only strengthens your faith, but it lets them know where you stand on certain issues. And now that they know what you believe, they’ll help to keep you in line.

Yearn.
One of the easiest ways to be pure is to want to be pure. God says ask and you’ll receive. If you want to be pure, you’re definitely headed in the right direction.

Thank the gods for the ACLU

The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit yesterday against the Department of Health and Human Services, accusing the Bush administration of spending federal tax dollars on an abstinence education program that promotes Christianity.

Filed in federal court in Boston, the lawsuit alleges that the programs and educational materials distributed by Silver Ring Thing are “permeated with religion” and use “taxpayer dollars to promote religious content, instruction and indoctrination.”

Silver Ring Thing is a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit that promotes abstinence until marriage through its Web site, brochures, videos and seminars. Teenage graduates of the program, after signing a covenant “before God Almighty” to remain virgins, receive a silver ring inscribed with a Bible passage that the group renders as “God wants you to be holy, so you should keep clear of sexual sin.”

the ACLU also points out that Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Sex Education Does Not Protect Teenagers’ Health.

There is no conclusive evidence that abstinence-only sex education, which teaches students to abstain from sex until married and generally only teaches about contraceptive failure, reduces the rate of unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Moreover, research indicates that many of these programs do not help teens delay having sex. Yet the federal government has funneled well over half a billion dollars since 1997 into abstinence-only programs, steadily increasing funding in recent years to more than $165 million annually.

On the other hand, evidence shows that comprehensive sexuality education programs that provide information about abstinence and contraception can help delay the start of sexual activity in teenagers and increase condom use among sexually active teens. Yet there is currently no federal program dedicated to supporting comprehensive sexuality education.

More on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to promoting healthy sexual practices.

What is working? A program in Philadelphia that has young women practice condom use and roleplay negotiations for safe sex has shown measurable improvements in the rate of STDs in an at risk population
