SXSW Band Roundup

2nd Annual Tampa Bay band showcase in Austin seeks applicants.

The SXSW music lovers group (SMLG) is once again going to put on a showcase of bands/solo musicians on the opening day of the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas. Last year a group of regular SXSW attendees, SMLG, raised money and helped send 6 Tampa Bay area bands to Austin to perform for conference attendees, music media and music fans. This year the group is looking for bands to perform on the opening day of the 2004 SXSW Music Conference. All interested bands should email the SMLG at bands@blogwood.com with a letter of interest stating their interest in being considered for the showcase on March 17th 2004 in Austin. All types of music are welcome. Bands can go to blogwood.com for more information.

All letters of interest must be received by November 30th.

The group is looking for bands that are already considering going to SXSW. Last year the group was able to raise money to fund the showcase and contribute a small amount to help fund the band’s expenses. Participating bands will be required to perform at 1-3 fund raising shows and supply their own back line. The group will select 5 bands from all submissions.

Preference will be given in order to the following:

Performers that have been selected by the SXSW Music Conference to perform
Performers that have applied to the SXSW Music Conference. (Deadline is November 7th. See sxsw.com for details) SMLG is NOT affiliated with SXSW.
Performers that have not already performed at the showcase
Performers with a retail quality CD
Performers with a track record of Tampa Bay area performances

All money raised after the showcase expenses will be split among the participating bands. SMLG does not guarantee any amount of support other than the showcase. Bands will be responsible for their own travel and accommodations and probably have to supply the back line and may have to supply sound.

Due to the expected volume of emails, SMLG will only be able to answer the emails of the bands they are considering. Hey we all have full time day jobs.

SMLG is a group of folks who LOVE music, goes to SXSW every year, and want to introduce Tampa Bay musicians to other like-minded people.

I don’t know how to contact this band but everything I hear about them makes me want to go see them. They are called the Painted Marys. They are one of those genre blending bands that it’s good that you can’t describe their music. 4 gals and 2 guys. They have no set instruments — I think they can play them all equally well. I wouldn’t call them loud and I wouldn’t call them quiet. You have to see them to believe them. Help! Who knows where they are going to play next. I only caught them briefly at The Girlz Garage show and at the Bob Schnieder show at Skippers. Tell me more!

I so saw them play earlier this year in Chicago and they totally changed the way I think a band should be. They are my new idols. Does anyone know about their cd (we stroke the white stripes with rapture)?

The Painted Marys have always been very deeply misunderstood. I think part of this misunderstanding stems from their onstage presence, which seems to convey a much more lively energy than their studio work.

The legendary 2002 Garden show is the obvious illustrative choice, and, of course, the source of the candy rumor, but I hardly need to point that out to this crowd!

obviously they suck:The Tribune has this to say about this “fresh” new band Painted Marys:

“Those kids can’t play a lick, they are just noise like a car makes” , said one woman who saw the group perform three months ago at Yeomnan’s Road Pub on Davis Islani, where the group “jumped on tables, and scarred customers”. In the Spring off 2002,

i hope those scars aren’t permanent, man!

i’v got some permanent scars, down by the bacon strip. and they ain’t purdey.

i saw the Painted Marys at CMJ – they didn’t play but they were at YOKO ONO’s press conference. never have i seen a band with such style. and grace. and there were so many of them! I couldn’t exactly figure out who was their “leader” – but that’s, like, part of their appeal. It’s all so decentralized, deconstructed. They seemed to be at EVERY showcase for EVERY band. Like, all these people do is DRINK AND GO TO GIGS!! I don’t know how they find time to make their own tunes. And they all danced so funny, that toward the end of every gig, if you didn’t conform to the Painted Mary’s way of dancing, you felt like YOU danced funny. I LOVE THIS BAND!!

The Painted Marys? Of course, we share common ground. But, what is “common,” okay? I am just doing what I do. The Marys studied Cage and it shows. They are not afraid of whimsy and chance, okay? So, it’s like this. We just take it day by day. That’s all.

Question about the Painted Marys: If they do SXSW this yr, is it the “classic” line-up from Live Aid in ’85? I hear rumors. If anyone knows, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE email me. (Also, if you have PMARYS bootlegs or tapes of live shows from ’02 tour, email asap!!!!!!!)

  14. maryluvsu on November 18, 2003 at 7:18 am

I’m fairly sure The Painted Marys WILL be appearing at 2004 SXSW (of course, it’s hard to get such a large band in one place at one time…)

I also heard they’ll be in the midnight time slot at La Zona. Not a show to miss!
